UNL Weed Guide Available - Allan Vyhnalek Newscolumn Week of February 25, 2008
One of the publications that farmers attending this year's Pesticide trainings received is the 2008 UNL Guide for Weed Management. The guide was provided as a part of the registration fee paid. For farmers not attending this year's training, guides can be picked up at the Extension Office for just $4.00.
The weed guide is a very valuable tool to have available. I appreciate several of the tables in the book. One table shows how herbicides will control weeds in certain crops. For example, if you needed to control cocklebur in corn, what herbicide works best? You'd be able to look up that Steadfast can only control about 65% of the cocklebur weeds, but 2, 4-D is rated to control 96-100% of the cockleburs.
Another table in the book tells about replant options after certain herbicides are applied. In addition, there is information about pasture, shelterbelt, aquatic and other weed control situations.
The back part of the book is a fairly complete herbicide dictionary. With new formulations of chemicals added yearly, this section is also handy. It not only shows what chemicals are included in a specific herbicide, it also defines the base chemicals.
There is even a complete listing of Restricted Use Herbicides. Another page lists the approximate costs of herbicides per unit. This book is full of good information. If I farmed, I would have this reference with me in the pickup for use all summer long.
The UNL Guide for weed management is available from the Butler County Extension Office for only $4.00; I'd encourage all that need to apply herbicides to have a copy.
I'd also like to remind Ag Producers that we still have the farm record keeping book for hand kept records available at the office. This "blue" book still costs just $5.00.
