Soybean Cyst Testing Kits Available - Allan Vyhnalek Newscolumn Week of August 18, 2008
Soybean Cyst Nematode is a small plant-parasitic roundworm that attacks the roots of soybeans, robbing the plant of its ability to take up nutrients and limiting potential yield. The symptoms of SCN often mimic those of other problems related to nutrient management, drought, stress, and herbicide injury. Many fields remain infected for years before the problem becomes large enough to warrant action. In others, the problems become apparent rapidly. The greatest indicator of potential SCN problems is an unexplainable drop in yield in areas of the field.

The first soybean aphids of the season were found on July 3 in Dixon County near Concord. It is typical to find a few in late June to early July in Nebraska, so this is not unexpected. The infestation was very small and lady beetles were already feeding on them; however, current weather conditions are favorable for aphid survival and reproduction, so they bear watching. In any case, if you have not begun scouting soybean for soybean aphid, now is the time to begin.
